AGE

After reading The Giver, I have noticed that the age of a person determines the person’s role in society. A person becomes an adult when he or she is capable of making the right choices and being responsible enough to realize the effects of each choice. Therefore, to become an adult, means that you are mature enough to make the choices that will end up determining your whole life. Consequently, since someone’s choices do affect the society greatly (what job they have), there is no real age that you are useless to the society. This can be determined however when a person is not capable of making the right choices. This usually happens twice in a person’s life; when they are very young, or very old. In The Giver, the Old are described to be useless people who just sit in a building all day, but in the real life, old people can be the richest person in the world, or even running a country. Age in years does not determine if you are useless or not in society, your capability of your mind determines it all.
